Fairfax County Public Schools

Fairfax County Public Schools (Virginia) are deploying the Roam Secure Alert Network (RSAN) for emergency communication with its administrators, principals and security personnel. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) will use the RSAN system to communicate quickly and reliably with thousands of key personnel, located in 241 schools and centers, spread across a 395 square mile area. Security personnel, and other authorized users, will be able to reach key personnel on all mobile devices (cell phones, pagers, Blackberries, etc.) and e-mail in seconds in the event of emergency. The system will be used to communicate important emergency information such as severe weather warnings and watches to school facilities in targeted areas within the county, changes to the federal terror threat level, emergency school closings, and other information during a crisis, power outage, or major emergency. RSAN will also be used for urgent administrative mess! ages.

The FCPS deployment of RSAN expands upon the existing RSAN deployment actively used by the 43 agencies in Fairfax County government. Roam Secure will network the systems together to enable real-time, redundant, text-based communication capability between FCPS, first responders and government leaders in the event of an emergency. Fred Ellis, a 20-year police veteran and Director of Safety and Security for FCPS, stated, "The Roam Secure Alert Network significantly enhances our existing communication capabilities and will allow us to target selected groups, or all the schools, with recipient-specific information. We really liked what we saw and realized the system would help us solve many communication needs."

Fairfax County Public Schools is the nation's 12th largest school district with 166,601 students and 21,297 full-time employees. Located just outside of Washington D.C., Fairfax County has a million residents and hosts numerous government agencies, federal contractors and large businesses. The Roam Secure Alert Network is an interoperable, text-based, two-way emergency communication solution already actively used by the Fairfax County Government and tens of thousands of first responders and employees at state, local and Federal government entities throughout the National Capitol region.
