San Francisco, California

San Francisco is the second most densely populated city in the U.S. after New York. San Francisco and surrounding region have seen their share of disasters such as the 1906 earthquake and fire and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The city has more than 798,680 people and serves millions of passengers each year and is the gateway for many Pacific Rim destinations.

In commemoration of the 17th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake, Mayor Gavin Newsom announced the launch of the AlertSF community notification system and internal city-wide system; the Mayor has also directed all city staff and specifically the first responder departments to use the system. Powered by the Roam Secure Alert Network, the system provides post-disaster information and tsunami alerts in the event of an earthquake or major disaster. AlertSF delivers messages to registered email accounts and wireless devices such as cell phones, Blackberrys, text-capable pagers and PDAs. AlertSF messages can currently be sent in both English and Spanish.

The AlertSF system allows users to indicate zip codes and specific addresses in the City that concern them. This specific information will allow users to receWestive alerts targeted to their neighborhoods. In the future, the system may be expanded to include other types of information such as traffic delays, power outages, and road closures. With the added power of the Roam Secure Information Exchange (RSIX) San Francisco is also actively receiving automated Amber Alerts, weather, and tsunami and earthquake feeds via RSIX. San Francisco also has the added capability to share emergency information with entities (NC RTTAC) in surrounding cities (including San Mateo and Marin), counties and states across the country with the real-time information sharing capabilities of RSIX.
