Alexandria, VA

A few days after the microburst storm that swept through Alexandria, the Museum hosted its own storm of guests – over 460 – during Tavern Day. Guests were delighted with the history of the building as presented by our Junior and seasoned Docents, amazed by 18th century science experiments courtesy of Project Enlightenment from McLean High School, and dazzled by the English Country Dancing of the Living History Foundation in the Ballroom. This year included an extra-special treat—the newly acquired Jefferson Letter on display.

Speaking of the Jefferson letter, the Museum formally thanked the American Legion #24 on August 4 for donating this letter to the City of Alexandria. Serendipitously found in their files, the Legion made the decision to donate it to the City so it could be seen by a wide audience. The letter offers a glimpse into 18th century travel and recommendations by the experienced traveler Thomas Jefferson. Sent to his good friend Joel Barlow, Jefferson suggests the best route from DC to Monticello. A small exhibit is currently installed in the museum and will be up until the end of September.

A festive group of dancers graced the Ballroom for the Jane Austen Ball on August 14. Everyone had a great time dancing, enjoying the gaming in the Assembly Room, viewing the special ice sculptures on the dessert collation, and, of course, partaking in a refreshing cup of ice cream. The next 18th century ball will be October 23 – the Masquerade Ball.

This upcoming fall season brings some new and fun programs to the museum. Mark your calendar now and check the Gadsby’s website for more information.

September 19: Talk like a Pirate Day
October 6, 13, 20: John Yagerline Lecture Series ~ Federal Washington
October 23: Mousquerade Ball (children’s program)
October 24: Presidential Salon with James Madison
November 19: Historic Beer Dinner with Yards Brewery

Plus our ever popular Tavern Toddlers starts Monday September 13. We have something for everyone this fall!

Did you know you can follow John Gadsby on Twitter? Or become his friend on Facebook? Get a $1.00 off tour admission on Foursquare? Taking advantage of social media, the Museum is now able to reach out to a broad audience as well as tell Gadsby’s story in “real time,” showcasing Gadsby’s entrepreneurial activities at the City Tavern & Hotel from 1796-1808.

Wonder where the large Ballroom Mirror went and why? The City Tavern building is furnished to the 1802 inventory of John Gadsby where the Ballroom had two “Looking Glasses” valued at $60. The mirror in the museum’s collection is currently in Williamsburg being conserved…and duplicated. Christopher Swann, conservator, is working on the historic mirror and Mack Headley, Master Cabinetmaker of Colonial Williamsburg, is creating the duplicate. We hope they both will be in place by the Birthnight Ball in February.

Fun-E Facts on...Joel Barlow The Jefferson Letter exhibit explores in-depth who Joel Barlow was, but did you know…
His close friend was Robert Fulton. Barlow’s nickname for him was “Toot.”
Barlow was thinking of buying Mount Vernon before he purchased Kalorama
During his time with the Scioto Land Company, Barlow was able to convince a large group of French refugees to settle in Ohio. Their first port in America – Alexandria, VA

Police Department Enhances Safe Return to School

The Alexandria Police Department,
in its annual effort to foster the start of a safe school year, will be
increasing enforcement as students return to school.  Additional police and parking enforcement
officers will be assigned, to enforce all traffic laws, including speeding,
passing school buses, illegal parking and failing to yield to pedestrians.

Enforcement will be increased in and around school zones and
along bus routes.  The Police Department
would like to remind drivers that the speed limit in school zones is posted at
15 or 25 mph.  Drivers are also reminded
that it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus with its lights flashing. This
action constitutes Reckless Driving and is subject to DMV fines. All violators
of these laws will be ticketed as the Police Department strives to promote the
safety and welfare of both children and adults.

Motorists and pedestrians are advised to use caution and
maintain a safe driving environment.

District Issues Protective Actions for Hurricanes

(Washington DC) – The District Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency (HSEMA) wants to remind residents to pay close attention to Hurricane Earl. Although the forecasted path indicates that the Metropolitan Area will not be affected by this hurricane, HSEMA advises everyone to continue to monitor the weather forecast. If in fact Hurricane Earl changes its path, rest assured that District agencies are prepared to respond immediately to any challenge the storm residuals may present.

Hurricanes can cause flash flooding, downed trees, downed power lines, power outages and massive amounts of debris on roads. Keep in mind that September is one of the peak months during the hurricane season that lasts from June 1 through November 30. Learning the hurricane warning messages and planning ahead can reduce the chances of injury or major property damage. Stay alert, get prepared, and be ready! For more information on hurricane preparedness visit the link provided below to obtain a Hurricane Fact Sheet.
HSEMA also advises you to have your evacuation and shelter plans ready before a disaster strikes. Develop an emergency communications plan in case family members are separated from one another during a disaster (a real possibility during the day when adults are at work and children are at school) have a family reunification plan.

Continue to monitor media updates. Stay tuned to local radio for information on evacuation routes and shelter locations. The primary radio stations for news and traffic are WTOP 103.4FM, WMAL 630 AM, WJZW 105.9FM, WKYS 93.9 FM, WHFS 99.1FM and WPGC 95.5FM

For power outages, call Pepco's 24-Hour Outage Report Line at 1-877-737-2662. For downed wires, call Pepco immediately at 202-872-3432. To have trees or debris removed, call the Mayor's Citywide Call Center at 311. To obtain a Hurricane Fact Sheet visit http://hsema.dc.gov/dcema/frames.asp?doc=/dcema/lib/dcema/pdf/hazards/Factsheet-Hurricanes.pdf

At 640 this AM a mountain lion was seen in the vicinity to the rear of 50 Loma Vista Drive near Highway 280 in Burlingame California.

If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.

Here are a few tips:

Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.

Keep a close watch on small children.

If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects.

Pick up small children.
